This week we learn more about where Tilde is from. The nearest town to The Notch is a little painted town, full of charm and a kind of brotherly love we all should comfort in knowing exists for when we need it. When I wrote it, I was in convalescence. Tilde’s Mountain Kitchen was my solace during dark times a decade ago. May it bring us some light during dark times, again.
First, we find our way to a place. Then it transforms us.
The format of this is more like a song. I had a sound in my head, a steady building of an OM chord of a chorus weaving words behind the verse, which at first seems abstract but escalates to take over the narrative at the end.
Does Jewell exist? You decide.
Mountain Jewell
Jewell's a place you should know When you have nowhere else to go When you're at your wits' end You can always find a friend It's just far enough away You can get here in a day Got time to bathe in a waterfall cascade? Retreat for a hike on a trail nature made? Looking for some snow to play? Enjoy crystal white terrain by sleigh
That's when it's time for a getaway— The town Of Jewell The town Of Jewell
In Jewell it can all work out We’ll give you the benefit of the doubt If you are in need of a helping hand There's someone here who understands We'll bring you everything you need Bring comfort in your time of grief Jewell's the town you can go Even if there's no one you know If you're looking to be saved Here’s the place that's full of grace If you're suffering a broken heart Can use a brand-new place to start When times are tough and jobs are lost It's a place for you, no matter the cost In Jewell everyone gets a second chance To follow their dreams, dance their own dance
That's when it's time to take a chance— The town Of Jewell The town Of Jewell
Jewell’s perfect when you need a breather It’s a restorative place in spite of weather Got that itch to get out of town? Tired of concrete, noise, bad smells around? When you know you should be doing What's worthwhile, don't stand there brooding! There's no place better to go When you're feeling all alone When you've lost your clear horizon Just bring yourself, you need no reason
That's when it's time for you to be in— The town Of Jewell The town Of Jewell

Jewell stays with you when you’ve left A place you won’t get outta your head First it’s a distraction from the busy life you lead Next thing you know, it’s something you need When your mind begins wandering That’s the sign Jewell’s under your skin When what used to be important to you Suddenly is no longer what you want to do If you find after you’ve been sleeping A vision of a painted town remaining
Then you know you were dreaming of— The town Of Jewell The town Of Jewell
When you dream at night For a chance of a brand-new life Surround yourself with Mother Nature Where it's about gettin’ back to basics One with a lot less stress and strife It’s not far, an easy ride!
That's when it's time to be heading to— The town Of Jewell The town Of Jewell

It’s no secret, this series came from my childhood love of Transcendentalists and Romantic thinkers:

Ralph Waldo Emerson – Nature (1836), Self-Reliance (1841)
Margaret Fuller – Summer on the Lakes, in 1843 (1844)
Walt Whitman – Leaves of Grass (1855 and later editions)
John Muir – My First Summer in the Sierra (1911)
William Wordsworth – The Prelude (1850), Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey (1798)
Samuel Taylor Coleridge – Frost at Midnight, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1798)
Percy Bysshe Shelley – Mont Blanc (1816), To a Skylark (1820)
John Clare – The Shepherd’s Calendar (1827), Nature Poems (1820s-30s)
